There’s a very simple device that you can undoubtedly find in your kitchen and bathroom that is constantly working hard to save your life. What is it? The simple GFCI, or Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. What does it do? It constantly monitors the electrical flow of a power outlet, and if it detects an imbalance, immediately stops the flow of electricity. This can be lifesaving since it can prevent you from being electrocuted.
Of course, you’ll want to know that you can depend on your GFCI before it kicks in to save your life. For that reason, it’s important to test the GFCIs in your home regularly. Fortunately, this is incredibly simple! GFCIs typically have a testing system built into the outlet, as seen by the TEST and RESET buttons. To do a proper test, simply plug something into the outlet, like a basic lamp, and turn it on. After that, hit the TEST button. If the lamp turns off, you’re good to go. If it stays on, you might be in trouble.
